According to information obtained by US agents, a North Korean-backed hacking group is linked to a massive theft of cryptocurrencies valued at $615 million.
The theft occurred last month and the victims were players of the popular online video game Axie Infinity.
Players can earn cryptocurrencies by playing or trading their avatars.
This is likely to be one of the largest “hacks” ever to hit the cryptocurrency world.
U.S. officials say a group known as “Lazarus,” believed to be controlled by North Korea’s main intelligence bureau, is behind the incident.
Lazarus Group gained notoriety in 2014 after they were accused of hacking Sony Pictures and publicly leaking confidential data.
A 2020 U.S. military report says North Korea’s hacking program dates back to at least the mid-1990s and has grown into a 6,000-strong cyber warfare unit known as Office 121 .
